That's where a career in this field begins. Not with a specification. With a person who has a problem she can feel on every peak shift, who's already decided the answer is a conveyor because somebody told her that's what we sell. She's not wrong to call. She's wrong about what she's buying. Your whole job lives in the gap between those two things.

Before this program answers the phone, you need to know what business you're in.

The players

Four kinds of companies move a project like Dana's from a voicemail to a running system. You'll spend your career working with all four, so learn what each one is for.

Solutions professionals get hired by integrators, by the distributors big enough to design as well as sell, and sometimes directly by end users who run their own engineering. The title on the badge changes. The job doesn't.

Projects get bought the way Dana's buying hers. Somebody feels a problem, decides on a category of answer, and calls a firm they were told knows that category. Then a solutions professional shows up and either sells them the category they asked for, or figures out what they actually need. Only one of those two builds a career.

If time permits, consult the OEM and the distributors early. They know their own equipment better than anyone, and what you learn from them can guide the conversations and the work downstream.

DESIGN PRINCIPLE Principles before products.

The job, in one sentence

A solutions professional analyzes the operation, communicates with the people who run it, designs a system that fits, and defends every decision in that design.

Analyze. Communicate. Design. Defend. In that order, and the order isn't decoration. You can't design what you haven't analyzed, and you can't defend what you can't explain.

Notice what's missing from that sentence. Nowhere does it say sell a conveyor. Conveyors are the medium. They're how the work gets done. The product you actually deliver is judgment. That's what Dana's paying for: someone to stand between her problem and every trade downstream and make the right calls. And that judgment isn't something you hand the customer from the outside. The right answer gets built with them, not for them. Dana holds things about her operation she can barely put into words, the stuff you only learn by asking and watching, and you hold the technical options she's never heard of. Neither of you reaches the right solution alone, so you build it together, or you confidently build the wrong thing.

WHYCustomers buy judgment, not steel. Anyone can read them the catalog. They pay you to know which page to turn to and which to skip.
WHENYou're the first technical person in the room. Discovery is yours before anyone draws a line or prices a part. Not when you're taking the order as written: if the customer names the product and you just quote it back, they didn't need you in the room.
WHEREBetween the customer's problem and every downstream trade: controls, install, maintenance, finance. Each of them works from your calls.
FAILURE IF IGNOREDTwo systems have already died on Riverside's floor. You'll see what killed both of them before this program is done.

The standard: the elegant, simple solution

There's a difference between the sophisticated answer and the right one. The sophisticated answer has more sensors, more zones, more software, and a bigger number at the bottom of the proposal. It's the easy one to design, because you never have to say no to anything.

The right answer is the minimum system that solves the real problem cleanly. That one's harder. You have to understand the problem well enough to know what you can leave out. You have to earn the simplicity.

Riverside doesn't need the most complex sorter on the market. Riverside needs its misdirects to stop and its dock to stop choking during a wave release. The engineer who keeps that in front of them will out-design the one who fell in love with the catalog, every single time.
