Size the Buffer

Turn two numbers into a zone count. A zone in singulated mode holds one package, so the count is buffer time multiplied by the arrival rate, plus margin for the wave you haven't watched.

SIZING DRILL

A pack station downstream can go unavailable for up to forty-five seconds during a wave. Cartons arrive at twenty-four a minute. Your longest case is twenty-two inches, and you'll ride it on a six-inch gap.

Work the zone count from the buffer time and the arrival rate, then the zone length from the longest case plus its gap, then multiply for the run length. Add a line of margin. Show your work.
