PART VI | LESSON 27: VALIDATE FOR PEOPLE MATERIAL HANDLING ACADEMY

Lesson 27 Worksheet: Validate for People

This one's a walk, not a quiz. Take the Riverside layout, walk it as the person, and turn every category into a written line. Then the two scenarios, then the audit note.

Guarding-Audit Walk Drill

Five stations on the walk. At each one, check the box only after you've written the test you applied and what the layout needs. The test matters more than the finding.

Station 1: The mezzanine decline overhead

The decline runs above the ground-floor work area. Write the test that decides whether the underside gets guarded, and say why a floor-measured height isn't it. Name the stairway's role.

Station 2: The pull-cord run

Roughly 300 feet of accessible run, operators at multiple points. Write what's mandated (the switch type, the cord length, the reach and access distances) and what's field practice you'd confirm against the switch manual.

Station 3: The forklift crossing

The conveyor crosses the main aisle, and this site logged two near misses last year. Write what the crossing needs and what those near misses change about the urgency.

Station 4: The drive locations

Bearing covers and rotating-shaft guards. Write where they go and how they get onto the conveyor order.

Station 5: The disconnects

LOTO for a maintenance team of one. Write the accessibility test every isolation point has to pass.

Scenario Drill

SCENARIO 1

A 480V incline conveyor runs next to a staircase. Measured straight down from its underside to the floor, it's well overhead. Does that settle whether it needs underside guarding? Name the actual test, and say what the staircase changes about the answer.

SCENARIO 2

A cell uses a robot the integrator markets as collaborative, and in this layout it runs at full speed reaching outside a fixed footprint. What do you need before you can decide the cell runs without full perimeter guarding? And what makes a gate interlock a safety device rather than just a switch?
